Description
The Nerava Handpan
Pure Steel. A Timeless D Kurd Voice.
The Sonara Nerava is for players drawn to the handpan's most essential qualities: a responsive steel playing surface, a clear melodic layout, and the freedom to let simple ideas develop into expressive music. Its clean, brushed-silver stainless steel appearance puts the instrument itself in focus—subtle circular grain, sculpted tone fields and a dark protective rim with an understated, modern character.
Tuned to D Kurd (D Minor) at 440 Hz, Nerava offers the familiar minor-scale palette that handpan players value for fluid improvisation, emotional melodies and rhythmic exploration. Choose from 9, 10 or 12 notes according to the range you want beneath your hands.
The D Kurd Character
With a central D3 ding and a melodic sequence incorporating A, B-flat, C, D, E, F and G, D Kurd offers a natural balance of tension and release. The B-flat gives the scale its unmistakably minor color, while the higher notes offer space to lift a phrase, vary an ostinato or resolve a musical idea. Work with single notes and intentional pauses, or combine alternating-hand rhythms with upper-register melodies.
Choose Your Configuration — Exact Notes
All note counts include the central ding. The following pitch lists correspond to the three configurations shown in the note-layout diagrams.
9 Notes — Essential D Kurd
D3 (ding) · A3 · Bb3 · C4 · D4 · E4 · F4 · G4 · A4
A focused range for foundational handpan technique, flowing note combinations and compact melodic phrases. An inviting option for new players who want a genuine D Kurd layout without an oversized range.
10 Notes — An Added Upper Voice
D3 (ding) · A3 · Bb3 · C4 · D4 · E4 · F4 · G4 · A4 · C5
The extra C5 expands the upper register without disrupting the familiar pattern. It gives your phrases an additional destination and opens up more possibilities for call-and-response playing.
12 Notes — Broader Musical Expression
D3 (ding) · A3 · Bb3 · C4 · D4 · E4 · F4 · G4 · A4 · C5 · D5 · F5
The added D5 and F5 create a wider melodic canvas for extended phrases, higher-register variations and more elaborate improvisation. Well suited to players who already enjoy the D Kurd sound and want more options within the same musical character.
Bb3 may also be written A#3. Both names refer to the same pitch in equal temperament.
440 Hz Concert Pitch
Every Nerava configuration is offered in 440 Hz only. This widely used tuning reference is a practical choice for players who plan to collaborate with other 440 Hz instruments, record melodic parts or expand a collection around a consistent pitch standard.
Brushed Stainless Steel Aesthetic
Nerava's bright silver-colored surface has an elegant brushed-metal appearance. The tonal areas are defined by smooth, circular contours, while a contrasting dark rim frames the instrument. With no ornamental surface pattern competing for attention, its design emphasizes the sculpted shape and the interaction of light across the steel.
For the Way You Play
Use Nerava for melodic improvisation, rhythm-driven exploration, quiet personal practice and meditative soundscapes. Begin with the central ding, follow a repeated pattern across the surrounding notes, then introduce accents, rests and higher-register responses. The scale's familiar harmonic relationships make it a rewarding starting point while leaving ample room to develop touch, phrasing and musical expression.
